Nigeria national team interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has admitted he is uncertain about continuing in the role if approached by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to lead the team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
However, there have been calls from several quarters that the team needs someone else going forward, though the NFF is yet to make a permanent decision.
Eguaveon is open to the role but uncertain
Speaking to a radio station, Kennis FM, the interim coach failed to commit to taking the job, though he did not rule out the possibility.
“If I am called upon (to manage the Super Eagles for the 2026 WCQ), I don’t know what I will say,” Eguavoen said.
“But all hands must be on deck. We want to try and qualify for the World Cup. March is just around the corner. If we have to do something (about the team), we need to do it quick,” he added.
Eguavoen stresses urgency in resolving coaching uncertainty
With the World Cup qualifiers coming up in March 2025, the former defender has called for the NFF to make a swift decision about who will be in charge of the Super Eagles.
“That person should come in as quickly as possible, settle down, so that we could speak, tweak things, exchange ideas, and talk about the way forward,” he said.
“The earlier (that a substantive coach is found), the better,” he added.
The Super Eagles face mounting pressure heading into the World Cup qualifiers, as they are still without a win in four matches while trailing Rwanda, Benin, and South Africa in a battle to secure the top spot.
