The Portuguese manager was offered a cut-price, short-term deal to remain as manager of the Super Eagles and has opened up on his decision to accept the contract

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has revealed the reason behind agreeing to a seemingly unfavourable short-term contract to remain at the helm of the Nigerian national team.

Peseiro agrees short-term extension with Super Eagles

Peseiro was left in contract limbo leading up to the expiration of his former contract with the NFF and it was generally feared that the Portuguese would not reach an agreement to extend his contract with the Nigerian national team.

However, an agreement was eventually reached for Peseiro to remain as Super Eagles coach, albeit just for six months, until the end of the 2023 AFCON tournament.

In addition to this, the manager’s salary was reportedly reduced to reflect the economic standing of the NFF, but Peseiro decided to persist with the Super Eagles.

Speaking in an interview with SkySports, Peseiro was critical of the organisation in Nigerian football, saying, "The structure and organisation is not like in Europe.”

He also explained that his reason for staying despite the disorganisation and reduction in his wages was down to the players in the team, saying, "The players pushed me to stay because they believe we can win [the AFCON title]."

Peseiro elaborated on his and the team’s desire to win the 2023 AFCON tournament, saying, "The main goal is to win the AFCON. We will need to be at our maximum because we know that there is good opposition.

“There is Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana and Ivory Coast. But we believe we can do it. I believe. And the players believe."

Despite a lengthy career managing various clubs and countries in the last 31 years, Peseiro is yet to win a major honour, but could break his duck if he successfully guides Nigeria to their first AFCON title since 2013.
