Nigerian national team midfield stalwart joined Augsburg in the Bundesliga on deadline day.

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has completed a season-long loan from Brentford to Bundesliga side Augsburg on deadline day.

The 26-year-old joined the Premier League side in the summer of 2021 from Danish side FC Midtjylland, who signed him from the Nigerian club/academy FC Ebedei.

He was signed upon the Bees' return to the Premier League and never really did establish himself as a starter, but he was a key component of Thomas Frank’s side that has retained their top-flight status since then.

Earlier in the window, it was reported that Nigeria International sought a different environment and a new challenge. Brentford were open to seeing him leave, and he had been linked with many clubs, including Valencia in the Spanish top flight.

GFNG reported earlier in the day that Augsburg, who finished midtable in the Bundesliga last season, were interested in making a move for the box-to-box midfielder.

The German announced a few hours before the deadline that they had completed the loan move for him. They kept the terms of the loan deal "confidential,” only confirming that it was for one season.

Onyeka was named in the Super Eagles squad to face Benin Republic and Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers on September 7th and 10th, respectively. Only after the international break will he join up with his new squad, as confirmed by the club.
