‘There will be competition’ - Rangers manager sends warning to Dessers following Igamane’s performance
In the face of increasing competition, Philippe Clement issued a warning to Cyriel Dessers, telling him to get better to guarantee his spot in the starting lineup.
Dessers' Dramatic Return
Entering the match as a substitute in the 89th minute, for the second successive game, Dessers showed his determination and skill by curling a shot past Aberdeen's goalkeeper Ross Doohan with virtually the last kick of the game, sealing the win for Rangers.
This goal also was Dessers' first of 2025 and his seventh for the club in the league in 20 appearances, providing a much-needed boost after limited playing time in recent outings.
Dessers' resurgence was complemented by fellow Nigerian Leon Balogun, who also came off the bench to contribute significantly.
Balogun scored Rangers’ second goal in stoppage time and assisted Dessers’ goal shortly after. Their combined efforts could be seen as a strong message to new Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle about their readiness to reclaim their places in the national team.
Rangers' Performance
The match saw Rangers dominate from the start, with Hamza Igamane opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Despite some pressure from disgruntled fans regarding recent performances, Rangers maintained control throughout the game.
The late goals from Balogun and Dessers ensured a comfortable victory, moving Rangers within 13 points of league leaders Celtic.
Dessers’ performance against Aberdeen is a big relief as he aims to regain his form and confidence ahead of international duties when Nigeria resumes World Cup qualifying matches later this year.
