Nigerians afraid for Super Eagles AFCON hopes after Côte d'Ivoire destroys Guinea-Bissau
Is there hope for the Super Eagles? Nigerians lament as Côte d'Ivoire destroys Guinea-Bissau in the AFCON opener.
Injury-affected in a 1-1 draw against giant-killers Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria were unable to get all three points in their own Group A opener.
Star scorer Victor Osimhen had to quickly equalize the score to spare their blushes, and they missed further opportunities.
Super Eagles vs Ivory Coast injury update
Sebastien Haller, the striker for Borussia Dortmund, was sidelined for Ivory Coast's match against Guinea-Bissau due to an ankle injury.
Due to a muscle ailment, Simon Adingra of Brighton was also sidelined for the first game.
It is unclear if either attacker will be fit to play against the Super Eagles on Thursday.
Before the tournament, Nigeria suffered several injuries that cost them important players like Wilfred Ndidi, a midfielder for Leicester, and Victor Boniface, an attacker for Bayer Leverkusen.
Super Eagles vs Ivory Coast preview
The Super Eagles are aware that they will need to step up significantly in this crucial heavyweight match if they want to win the group.
In addition to starting their campaign with a victory, Les Éléphants extended their winning streak to seven games in all competitions.
Only seven of the Super Eagles' seventeen shots were on goal, indicating their wastefulness in front of the goal.
Osimhen, who made six of these tries alone, will be crucial in this situation against Ivory Coast
They will try to continue their recent success at the Africa Cup of Nations, where they have only lost one of their last 12 group-stage matches and have only once failed to score a goal.
With solid squads, both sides should be able to compete fiercely in this match.
At the Africa Cup of Nations, host countries have only dropped one of their previous 38 group-stage matches, which is encouraging for Ivory Coast the 1992 and 2015 winners.
Super Eagles vs Ivory Coast Head-to-Head
With a long-standing rivalry, the two sides have faced off 27 times in all competitions since 1967.
Ten of the games have resulted in draws, giving the hosts a slim 9–8 advantage in the head-to-head record.
When the two teams last faced off in a friendly in 2015, the hosts prevailed 1-0 as they split the last four games.
In their six AFCON encounters with Cote d'Ivoire, the Super Eagles have prevailed four times, two of which have been by penalties, and the other two have gone to the home team.
Remarkably, in four out of the six competition editions where they have faced off against the hosts, Nigeria has advanced to the finals.
When they played each other in the AFCON quarterfinals in 2013, Nigeria prevailed 2-1 and a week later, they would win their third AFCON crown.
