Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun expressed her heartfelt emotion as the latest Nigerian player to join the NWSL.

The talented Super Falcons of Nigeria midfielder, Deborah Abiodun, is brimming with emotion following her recent signing with the Washington Spirit in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). 

This important move signals a huge transition in her career as she leaves behind her collegiate soccer journey at the University of Pittsburgh, where she played for two seasons, to embrace the professional stage.

Abiodun's decision to forgo her final two years of NCAA eligibility shows her determination to pursue her professional aspirations and impressive ambitions.

Reflecting on this momentous occasion, Abiodun shared her heartfelt feelings about joining the Spirit.

“I’m beyond thrilled to take this next step in my career by joining Washington Spirit,” she told the club’s website

“This isn’t just a dream; it’s a purpose I’ve poured my heart and soul into.” Her words convey not only excitement but also a deep commitment to her craft and the game she loves.

During her time at Pitt, she made an impressive impact, starting 28 of 34 games and scoring 10 goals while providing three assists. 

Her standout performances earned her recognition on the All-ACC teams and highlighted her potential as a rising star in women’s soccer.

The midfielder's journey has been shaped by significant experiences, including her participation with the Super Falcons at both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the recent 2024 Olympics in Paris. 

These international opportunities have prepared her well for the challenges of professional soccer in the NWSL.

As Abiodun prepares to don the colors of Washington Spirit, she stated further the importance of joining a team that values player growth and development. 

“I’m ready to give everything I have to the game I love,” she affirmed. “Especially with a team that cares about its players’ growth and development, which makes Washington Spirit a perfect team for me to achieve my purpose.”

With a three-year contract that includes an option for 2028, Abiodun is set to occupy an international roster slot for the Spirit.
