With the Premier League nearing a dramatic end as teams battle for the title, European places, and to avoid relegation, a supercomputer has predicted who, among fierce rivals Manchester United and Liverpool, will earn a top-four place and a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League group stages.
Liverpool and Manchester United in heated battle for top four
Liverpool have won their last six matches in a row and have climbed up the Premier League table to fifth, threatening Manchester United’s standing in the top four as they are now just one point behind the Red Devils.
The Red Devils have lost their last two Premier League matches and dropped points in three of their last four fixtures, putting their participation in next season’s UCL at risk and opening the door for Liverpool to steal a dramatic top-four finish despite the Reds starting the season in a funk.
Supercomputer predicts Manchester United to finish ahead of Liverpool
Despite Liverpool appearing to be favourites based on form, FiveThirtyEight’s supercomputer has deemed Manchester United the most likely team to finish in the top four over their prominent rivals.
Using data, the football analytics company’s computer predicts that Manchester United will be in the top four at Liverpool’s expense, especially owing to the Red Devils having a game in hand.
The Mancunians face Wolves, Bournemouth, Chelsea at Old Trafford in their spare game, and a final match against Fulham.
While Liverpool play relegation strugglers Leicester City and Southampton on either side of an Anfield fixture against Aston Villa.

The supercomputer predicts that Liverpool will win two and draw one of their final three matches to finish on 68 points, while Manchester United will pip them to the final UCL place by winning two matches and drawing two of their last four matches to finish on 71 points.
