Eguavoen’s Super Eagles experience

The 59-year-old made his Super Eagles debut in 1987 and played until he retired in 1998. He was a member of the team that won the 1994 AFCON for Nigeria, and upon his retirement from football, he went into coaching.

Eguavoen has coached the Super Eagles across multiple stints, winning the AFCON bronze medal in 2006 as a coach. He is currently the technical director of the team, a role he has occupied since 2020—when he has not been called upon to coach the team on an interim basis.

His heavy involvement in the Super Eagles as a player, as a coach and as an administrator makes him an ideal candidate to weigh in on the comparisons between the 1994 set—referred to as the golden generation—and the current Super Eagles crop

What Eguavoen said

Speaking on the Home Turf podcast, the former Gent defender presented his case. He explained that the team then were very cohesive because they played in the local leagues and rose through the ranks together.

However, he credited the current squad for being technically sound and for playing in an age where the game is more tactically advanced than it has ever been.

“There is a slight difference, not really major,” Eguavoen said when asked if there's a difference between the 94 set and the current Super Eagles.

“First thing is about character, and there were not so much money involved, and we were very dedicated. I'm not saying these ones are not dedicated now, but times change. It's a generational thing as well.

“You know, we all played in the local league Stationery Stores, [Bendel] Insurance, and all of that. And most of us played from the Flying Eagles with that transition. So the unity and the streetwise mentality were also in us.

“Present Eagles today are technically very strong, and today football is, I think, more tactical too than physical. Referees now protect players, more than before.”

Eguavoen recently coached the current crop on an interim basis before Malian tactician Eric Chelle was given the job permanently. He has called for support for the former Les Aigles coach as well as the Super Eagles as they try to qualify for the World Cup
