Abbas 'Zamalek’ Magongo

Considered the best player to have worn the green jersey, Tanzania-born Magongo is one of the ten best Gor Mahia players of all time as he was loved by the club’s supporters but feared by rivals not just for his impact but his ability to entertain.

His deft touches, flicks and tricks were a joy to watch and despite his small frame, he had boundless energy, linking up play upfront while tracking back to help with defensive duties.

Popularly known as Zamalek, Magongo was the Zinedine Zidane version of Gor Mahia, a midfielder who was adept at creating chances for his teammates and scoring freely.

Magongo played for Gor between 1984 and 1991 and led them to the title in his first season, before showing his true prowess in 1985 when he scored 15 goals as K’Ogalo retained their title. That season, he scored a brace against bitter rivals AFC Leopards before netting the only goal as Gor silenced Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf in a friendly match.

Magongo earned the nickname Zamalek in 1984 when during an African Champions Cup second round match against the Egyptian side, he tracked back and brought down the team’s forward outside the box but the referee pointed to the spot. He would protest alongside his teammates, leading to his sending off, with Gor later suspended from continental matches.

In 1987, he was key to Gor winning their first and only continental title to date following their Mandela Cup (now CAF Confederation Cup) victory.

In the semi-final against Esperance of Tunisia, he scored in a 1-1 draw away after outwitting several defenders to tap home and in the return leg, Gor were on the verge of eliminating following a 2-2 draw, but he delivered a pin-point cross in injury time which was headed home by Peter Dawo to hand K’Ogalo the win.

Austin Oduor

Popularly known as Makamu, Oduor started out as a midfielder before later switching to defence. He joined Gor in 1980 but found it hard to break into the first team, having to deal with bench roles for the better part of the season before he got his chance later that term after an injury to key winger Nahashon Oluoch.

It is during that time that he earned the nickname Makamu. He was handed a start in midfield ahead of Gideon Hamisi as Gor took on Bendel Insurance of Nigeria in the African Champions Cup in a match K’Ogalo were not expected to win. However, the Kenyan side pulled off a 2-1 victory in Nigeria, Makaumu scoring the winning goal after George ‘Best’ Yoga had netted the first.

He would become a mainstay into the team until 1982 when he made a switch from midfield to defence. His switch was enforced by circumstances as Gor had lost Oluoch and Sammy Owino who had gone for studies abroad, Paul Oduo, Allan Thigo and Tim Ayieko had retired while Andrew Obunga, Charles Ondiek, Mike Ondiek and George Ayuka were suspended.

The team was also ravaged by injuries and with dependable sweeper Mike Ogolla out, Oduor was forced to take over the role since he was good at anticipating and intercepting passes while he possessed good ball playing skills.

At the time, a sweeper was necessary as he was the last man in defence who did not have marking roles but set the offside trap and Oduor was good at this plus his long passes were pin-point. He would play in defence until his retirement and won three straight league titles with Gor from 1983-1985. Another who is classified among the ten best Gor Mahia players of all time.
