Arsenal secured a hard-fought victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park Stadium despite having a man down in the second half.

The Gunners were looking for their second win in a row as they travel to South London on Monday to face Palace.

They defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 despite one of their players getting sent after receiving two yellow cards.

Martin Odegaard’s spot kick was enough to secure a vital win over stubborn Crystal Palace in a highly contested game.

As it happened

Crystal Palace are unchanged from the side who beat Sheffield United on the opening day. Marc Guehi has recovered from a knock he picked up in that game but Michael Olise remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Arsenal made just one enforced change from their opening Premier League game against Nottingham Forest.

Takehiro Tomiyasu replaces full-back Jurrien Timber, who will be out for the majority of the season with a knee injury while Oleksandr Zinchenko is on the bench after recovering from a calf injury.

The Gunners started the game on the front foot and dominated the game but could not penetrate the defence of Crystal Palace.

They got their first chance of the game in the 36th minute when Eddie Nketiah’s effort hit the post after chipping over the bar when inside the six-yard box.

Shortly after, Declan Rice finds the Arsenal forward in the box and only just Sam Johnstone to beat and opts for a chip that does indeed clear the Palace keeper, but also the bar.

The referee blew the whistle for halftime with the game still goalless and Arsenal dominating most of the possession.

The second half started and Arsenal continued their possession-based football as Crystal Palace held their lines.

Arsenal's pressure paid off in the 54th minute when Martin Odegaard sees Eddie Nketiah, send a free-kick into the box for him to meet, take the ball away from Sam Johnstone and then go down after contact from the keeper.

The VAR reviewed the incident and deemed it fit to be a penalty with the Gunners a step closer to opening the scoring.

Martin Odegaard staggers his run and then slots the ball into the corner as Sam Johnstone is fooled to dive the other way.

However, in the 65th minute, the game changed. Takehiro Tomiyasu, who was booked for time wasting earlier was shown a second yellow card for taking down Jordan Ayew.

This can't be overturned as it is a second yellow. It would have been an interesting one for VAR if it could be as it was a soft foul.

The Gunners held on in the game despite the pressure from Crystal Palace as they secured their second victory of the season.
