John Terry has explained why he would be heartbroken if one of Jose Mourinho’s records at Chelsea were to be broken.
John Terry has fondly recalled Chelsea's 2004-05 season, emphasising the formidable defensive setup that led to their record of conceding just 15 Premier League goals.
The title-winning season under Jose Mourinho’s management was a historic campaign marked by an exceptional defensive record.

The team conceded a mere 15 goals in 38 Premier League matches, setting a new league record that still stands today.
That remarkable feat was built upon a solid defensive structure, anchored by goalkeeper Petr Cech, who kept a record-breaking 24 clean sheets, and a formidable central defensive partnership of Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, shielded by the influential Claude Makelele in midfield.

Terry credits Mourinho for Chelsea’s defensive stronghold

The former Chelsea captain credits Mourinho's influence in that season, highlighting training sessions focused intensely on not conceding and the Portuguese manager’s relentless demands for improvement.
“Mourinho made a big difference,” recalled Terry. “He would tell us every day that not conceding goals was big, huge. When we did a small-sided game at training, previously you would do a five-a-side and it would end up 5-4 or 5-2.
“We started doing games under Mourinho and they would end up being 0-0, 1-0. If it was 0-0 and you agreed to play on for another 10 minutes, there would still be no goal.
“It was like an art. People were throwing their bodies on the line, the level was always going up, and everyone was trying to impress the manager. He was driving those sessions, which were big.
“During matches themselves, he was always on us, nothing was ever good enough. Even if you came in at half-time and it was 0-0, he would find something to tell you off about. It would still happen if you were 3-0 up.”

The five-time Premier League winner, who likens the defence and defensive midfielder Makelele to "having three levels of security”, would be "devastated" if any club eclipsed that 2004-05 feat.
“It was like having three levels of security,” continued Terry. “If you were building a house, it was like having Claude Makelele at the front gate, Ricardo Carvalho and myself in the garden and Petr Cech at the door. You’re not going to get in, are you?
“I genuinely can’t see it being beaten, certainly not in my lifetime. I would be devastated if it is.”
Terry retired from playing in October 2018 and has since pursued coaching roles with Aston Villa and Leicester City before returning to the Chelsea Academy in July 2023.
