Rivers United is a football club based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and it has become the new headline in town after signing former Super Eagles coach for two years.

The pride of Rivers as the club is known was formed in 2016 through the merger of two clubs, Dolphins FC and Sharks FC, both of which were based in Port Harcourt.

The merger was orchestrated by the Rivers State Government, aiming to consolidate resources and create a more competitive team capable of representing the state at the highest levels of Nigerian and African football.

Dolphins, Sharks turned to Rivers United

Dolphins FC, founded in 1988, had a rich history with multiple domestic trophies, including the Nigerian FA Cup and the Nigerian Premier League title.

Sharks FC, established in 1972, also had a strong following and had contributed significantly to the local football scene.

The merger combined the strengths of these two clubs, creating a new entity with a robust foundation.

Achievements and Milestones of Rivers United

Since its inception, Rivers United has quickly risen to prominence, in its debut season in 2016, the club finished as runners-up in the NPFL, narrowly missing out on the title but securing a place in the CAF Champions League.

The club's home matches are played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium; Port Harcourt, a venue that has witnessed many thrilling encounters and has become a fortress for the team.

Rivers United continued to build on its early successes, consistently finishing in the top positions in the NPFL.

The club's dedication to excellence was rewarded in the 2021-2022 season when they clinched the NPFL title, their first league championship.
