With the team poised to end the season without a major trophy
Bayern Munich legend Lothar Mathaus has labelled the decision to hire current manager Thomas Tuchel a mistake on the part of club amidst a possible second-place finish in the Bundesliga.
Bayern on the verge of trophyless season
The Bavarians have endured a poor season and could be headed for a trophyless campaign as they head into the final Bundesliga game behind Borussia Dortmund on the league table, having already been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League and DFB Pokal.
Both cup eliminations came during Tuchel’s tenure and Mathaus has claimed that the new manager made the team worse after being appointed in March and his signing is the reason why Bayern Munich might end the season without major silverware.
Bayern Munich decided to part ways with Julian Nagelsmann midway through the season with the team still in all competitions to appoint Tuchel, in a move that is now being heavily criticize.
Mathaus slates Tuchel appointment
Speaking with German outlet Bild, Mathaus stated that although the team already had issues under former coach Julian Naglesmann, the issues were worsened by signing Tuchel.
He said, “Of course, many mistakes were made even before the change of coach, which ultimately led to this situation.
“But the team, which were still on course to win the treble under Nagelsmann, are playing worse under Tuchel,"
"The squad is individually so strong that you have to at least become a champion with them, but the team don't work because everyone is busy with themselves.
“Tuchel increased the uncertainty because at his press conferences, which I find a bit strange, he always talks about how difficult everything is and what doesn't work, instead of standing up for the team."
Bayern Munich’s chiefs have stuck by their decision to appoint Tuchel after sacking Naglesmann, but a lack of silverware at the end of the season might cause them to have a re-think.
