The young left-back reported the abuse to match officials at halftime, though the perpetrators have yet to be identified.

Despite the abuse, Balde expressed pride in his identity, saying, “Being called black… doesn’t bother me. I’m black and I’m proud of it.”

What struck him most was the irony of the abuse, considering Getafe’s captain, Dakonam Djene, is also Black. “What surprises me is the fact they abuse you when Getafe has a black captain,” Balde added, questioning the irrational nature of the insults.

Balde staying focused amidst challenges

The abuse suffered has not coloured Balde’s feeling about playing in Spain, however, saying, “Because 3 or 4 people insult you, it shouldn’t be generalised to all of Spanish football.”

Despite the off-field controversy, Balde remains determined to grow as a player. Reflecting on his career, he said, “My first season was very good, the second was more complicated, and I had a 6-month injury. It’s not easy to come back. Not all of us are Pedri or Lamine, who are born with incredible talent.”

Balde also addressed the high expectations placed on young players today, adding, “I’m only 21 years old. At that age, they ask you to be the best in the world. I can improve in attack and defence. But I’m a starter for Barca, and that’s not easy.”

Balde plays for the Spanish national football team but has roots in the Western African country of Guinea-Bissau.

As Barcelona prepares to face Atalanta in their next Champions League fixture, Balde will be hoping to put the incident against Getafe behind him to help the Blaugrana finish the group stages in style.
