In the face of increasing competition, Philippe Clement issued a warning to Cyriel Dessers, telling him to get better to guarantee his spot in the starting lineup.

Dessers has struggled with his form since the start of the season, having scored only one goal for Rangers in the Scottish League.

The Super Eagles star was left out of the Rangers squad to face Nice by his manager, with Hamza Igamane replacing the striker.

However, it was Igamane who stole the spotlight, scoring two goals in Rangers 4-1 win over French side Nice away from home in the UEFA Europa League.

Clement speaks on Dessers

The Rangers boss cautioned Dessers that he would have fierce competition for his position following his team's victory over OGC Nice.

According to Football Scotland, the Rangers gaffer said, "Yeah, for sure. There will be competition between them, and it's about being who is in the best shape at one moment. That is never a decision for weeks or months, that's showing it game by game."

Igamane threatened Dessers' spot in the squad by making a strong case for himself during the match with a brace and an assist.

The Nigerian international wasted a great chance to score when he replaced the young Moroccan forward.

Dessers got a cross inside the penalty box a minute before stoppage time, handled it, and only needed to past the goalie before he startlingly missed with his attempt.

Meanwhile, Dessers' performance has also led to being omitted by Augustine Eguavoen for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen then explained his decision to select Sadiq Umar and Kelechi Iheanacho over Dessers for the games.
