Augsburg vs. Leverkusen: Tella provides spark as Super Eagles derby ends in defeat for Onyeka
Nigerian duo of Frank Onyeka and Nathan Tella went head-to-head as Augsburn hosted champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
Mbeumo was particularly impressive, scoring two goals and assisting another, while Wissa contributed with a goal and an assist.
Their combined efforts not only secured a comprehensive win but also made Brentford the first club in the league this season to have two players reach double figures in goals, with Mbeumo now at 13 goals and Wissa at 10.
The Bees opened the scoring early, with Kevin Schade netting in the 6th minute. Mbeumo doubled the lead in the 62nd minute after a clever one-two with Wissa, before converting a penalty just seven minutes later.
DR Congo’s Wissa capped off the scoring in stoppage time, further emphasising Brentford's dominance throughout the match.
Reflecting on his team's performance, Brentford's coach Thomas Frank praised his offensive players, singling out Mbeumo and Wissa.
“We played with five very offensive players, we are very dangerous and we had a good day today,” he told Premier League.
“[Mbeumo and Wissa] have a very good relationship on and off the pitch and you can see that in a lot of the goals today. Our group really like each other, work for each other and care about each other. I think that’s extremely important.”
This victory is particularly significant for Brentford as they move up to 11th place in the league standings, while Southampton remains rooted at the bottom, struggling with just six points from 20 matches.
Mbeumo and Wissa's impressive partnership adds pressure on Southampton's new manager Ivan Juric, who has yet to secure a win since taking charge.
