The former striker feels his record would have been broken by now if he had an opportunity to present the Golden Boot award to its winners
Gor Mahia legend Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Ochieng feels he should have been bestowed with the honour of handing over the Golden Boot Award to its winners since he is the record holder.
Sonyi, who scored 26 goals for K’Ogalo in 1976, has proudly held the record for 47 years before Kenya Police striker Elvis Rupia equaled it with his brace against Vihiga Bullets on Wednesday.
With Rupia in with a chance of breaking it in the final league match on Sunday, Sonyi feels the feat would have been beaten by now if he had had the opportunity of handing over the top scorer’s gong to its winners down the years as it would have given him a chance to pass on some advise to the strikers.
“Forty-seven years is a long time. FKF should even be rewarding me. The person who emerges top scorer, they should be calling me to present the trophy because I am the record holder,” said Sonyi.
“That way, I will get an opportunity to encourage the Golden Boot winner and the others to try and get there. I will also advise them how to improve their game.

FKFPL: Elvis Rupia on the cusp of breaking Sonyi's 26 premier league goal record
Elvis Rupia equalled broke the long-standing record of 26 goals (not 27 as stated by FKF) in a single KPL season set by Maurice Sonyi Ochieng in 1976.
“In other sports, the record holder is rewarded for as along as they hold their record but why not in football? Here, we dismiss legends. They should not forget us.
“Even Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier call us on certain occasions and facilitates us to watch matches in Nairobi like we recently did with the Mashemeji derby.
“If I get this chance (to award Golden Boot winner) I would be encouraging the strikers. By now, maybe someone would have broken the record earlier because I cannot play but can share the knowledge to the strikers to get better.”
