Chelsea's transfer dealings in the summer has attracted criticism from one of their former stars.

Glen Johnson, who was at Chelsea from 2003–2007, has criticised the club's failure to land Victor Osimhen this summer, stating that the Super Eagles striker was the player required to take their project to the next level.

Chelsea's chase for Osimhen

Victor Osimhen was embroiled in a summer-long transfer saga before he eventually joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan after his continuation at Napoli was taken off the table.

Chelsea were one of the clubs involved in the saga, and according to Super Eagles legend Mikel Obi, the Blues were close to landing him and were only a few details away from sealing the deal

What Glen Johnson said

The former Liverpool defender, Johnson, in a conversation with Betfred, questioned Chelsea's failure to sign the Nigerian.

“The obvious one would be Victor Osimhen. He was the big name they wanted and didn’t get,” he said.

“They’ve signed loads of youngsters that may not be in the team straight away, despite spending a lot of money on them, and I think Osimhen is the big signing that they’ve missed out on.”

Johnson was surprised with Osimhen's eventual move to Galatasaray, as it came out of the blue.

“It’s a weird deal altogether because at one moment there were supposedly only two teams in the race to sign him, and then the window’s shut and he’s moved on loan to a team that wasn’t even in the conversation.“
