Nigeria continue to boast world-class talent who ply their trade in Europe and that is evident once again this season.
So far in 2024/25, many of Nigeria’s star players have excelled for their clubs across Europe, standing out in the top leagues in the continent.
We take a closer look at the top Super Eagles players this season, providing you with the best rated XI from Europe’s top seven leagues:
GK – Maduka Okoye
Playing for an inconsistent Udinese team in Serie A has meant that Okoye has faced his challenges this season, but the Super Eagles goalkeeper has had moments of brilliance, resulting in WhoScored (link https://www.whoscored.com/) rating him 6.56.
The goalkeeper has a 64.41% save percentage across his 16 league appearances, as well as a 76.42% pass accuracy for Udinese.
RB – Bright Osayi-Samuel
Osayi-Samuel has not been a consistent starter for Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce side, starting just 10 league games, but the Nigerian has been a strong performer whenever called onto the pitch by the legendary Portuguese manager.
His outstanding attacking ability as a full-back, ranking in the top 10% for pass accuracy, long ball accuracy, touches in opposition box and fouls won per 90, have helped him produce several impressive performances – leading to WhoScored rating him 6.65.
CB – Caleb Okoli
Okoli has had a challenging first year for Leicester City, taking his time to adapt to English football while also playing for a side that are struggling in the battle for survival in the Premier League.
Nonetheless, Okoli has shown moments of superb individual quality, including a sensational goal-line clearance against Manchester United in the FA Cup.
While the central defender has made only 16 appearances in the league, 11 of which have been starts, Okoli has been awarded a fair 6.46 rating by WhoScored.
CB – Calvin Bassey
Bassey, alongside his Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi, has been a standout performer in a strong Fulham side this season, playing a key role in the Cottagers currently fighting for a European qualification place in the league table.
The defender is one of the most combative in the league, highlighted by his brilliant 129 recoveries this term, while his ability to shutdown attackers was most recently shown in his stellar performance against Manchester United in the FA Cup.
These consistently impressive showings in the Premier League have resulted in WhoScored rating Bassey with 6.52, in 28 appearances.
LB – Ola Aina
Aina has been one of several standout stars for Nottingham Forest this season, helping the side to third place in the Premier League as they continue to mount an unlikely Champions League push.
Aina has excelled in both possession and defence for Forest, ranking in the top 10% of all Premier League defenders for total successful dribbles, fouls won, tackles won, duels won and recoveries – with WhoScored giving him a 6.85 rating as a result.
CM – Frank Onyeka
Onyeka joined Augsburg just after the beginning of the 2024/25 season, and the midfielder has been a sensation for the German club, particularly in the defensive third of the pitch.
The midfielder ranks among the top 10% of all Bundesliga midfielders for total tackles won, duels won, interceptions and fouls won, resulting in a solid 6.74 rating.
CM – Wilfried Ndidi
Ndidi may be playing for a Leicester City side that are struggling against relegation from the Premier League, but the midfielder has been one of few shining lights for the Foxes so far this season.
WhoScored have rated Ndidi 6.77 in the Premier League from 20 matches, with his defensive contributions playing a large role in that high rating. Ndidi is in the top eight per cent of all midfielders for aerial duels won per 90, with 2.20, while he also ranks highly for tackles won and duels won.
CM – Alex Iwobi
Alongside Bassey, Iwobi is having a superb season for Fulham, playing a key role in helping them in their battle to secure European football, contributing seven goals and four assists in 29 league appearances, giving him an overall rating of 6.97.
The midfielder is among the top seven per cent of all Premier League midfielders for total expected assists, successful passes, accurate long balls and chances created this season – showing the amazing level he has reached for Fulham.
FW – Ademola Lookman
Lookman has been nothing short of sensational for Atalanta in recent seasons, and that has been the case once again this term, managing 13 goals and five assists in 23 Serie A appearances for the club, with WhoScored rating him 7.37.
The forward has produced some incredibly vital performances and goals for Atalanta, helping them to sit third in the Serie A table, still in the battle to secure their first-ever Serie A league title.
FW – Victor Osimhen
The world-class striker is comfortably the top rated Nigerian player in Europe’s top seven leagues this season, boasting a 7.70 rating in the Turkish Super Lig.
Osimhen has netted 20 goals and recorded four assists in his 21 league appearances for Galatasaray, helping the Turkish giants to sit top of the league, while they are also yet to be beaten.
FW – Moses Simon
The third best-rated forward in this team, Simon has been Mr Consistency for Nantes since joining the club in 2019, and this season is shaping up to be one of his best in a Canaries shirt.
Simon has netted six and assisted eight in 24 Ligue 1 appearances - earning him a 7.17 WhoScored rating - playing a massive part in Nantes’s battle for survival in the French top division.
