CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers got off the mark over the weekend in style as the giants took early leads in their respective groups.
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and Kampala Queens registered the first wins on the opening day on Saturday at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
Kalsa Tadesse and veteran Ethiopia National Team captain Loza Abera saved the Ethiopians, who came from a goal down to brush aside BUja Queens (Burundi)’s threat in the first game.
Abera won the golden boot in 2021 and 2022, scoring 13 and 11 goals, respectively.
Uganda Crested Cranes striker Fazillah Ikwaput inspired debutants Kampala Queens to a 3-0 victory over South Sudanese side Yei Joint Stars in the other match in Njeru on Saturday.
2021 champions Vihiga Queens came from a goal down to beat New Generation (Zanzibar) 3-1.
Amina Hemeed had given the Zanzibar side a shock lead in the 20th minute but Winnie Babirye restored sanity eight minutes into the break.
Ruth Khasokha and substitute Martha Emedot scored in the second half to ensure the Kenyans grabbed their first win.
In the final game of the matchday, Abdallah Stumai and Daniella Donisia helped JKT Queens from Tanzania to a 2-1 victory over AS Kigali.
The matches continue on Tuesday with Group A fixtures as Kampala Queens face Buja Queens before CBE FC plays FAD from Djibouti.
