The transfer deadline day is set for some volatile activity as the window closes
With the European transfer window set to slam shut, here are five of the biggest potential deals to watch out for.
Victor Osimhen to Chelsea
After a summer of transfer merry-go-rounds, the final scene in the Victor Osimhen transfer saga could see the Super Eagles star settle for a move to Premier League giants Chelsea this summer.
The Blues are the only club in Europe willing to negotiate a deal for Osimhen and have been in contact with both the player and his club Napoli over a dramatic deadline-day transfer.
Osimhen is believed to be on the brink of agreeing terms with Chelsea over a blockbuster deal that could see him become the latest Nigerian star to play for the Blues after Celestine Babayaro, John Obi Mikel, and Victor Moses.
Victor Osimhen to Al Ahli
If Osimhen is unable to secure a move to Chelsea on deadline day, the thought of spending the next six months on Napoli’s bench behind Antonio Conte’s preferred option Romelu Lukaku could push Victor Osimhen into the arms of Al Ahli.
The Saudi Pro League side have reportedly agreed a deal with Napoli for Osimhen’s transfer, with the remaining greenlight laying only with the player, so a deal should not be too difficult to complete if Osimhen decides he wants to move to Saudi Arabia.
The striker has a tough decision to make with some fans already balking at the idea, while Osimhen has received support from former Super Eagles stars to make the move to Saudi Arabia.
Jaden Sancho to Chelsea
It looked like all was forgiven between Jadon Sancho and Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag after last season’s media debacle, but the Englishman’s miss in the Community Shield penalty shootout loss to Manchester City seems to have put him back on the Old Trafford chopping block.
Since the penalty miss against Manchester City, Sancho has failed to make the Manchester United squad for either of their first two Premier League matches this season and is reportedly desperate to leave the club to avoid a repeat of last season’s shenanigans.
Chelsea have surprisingly become the front-runners for Sancho’s signature, although Juventus are also believed to be keeping tabs on the English winger with the transfer window winding down.
Raheem Sterling to Arsenal
Having signed 10 players so far in the transfer window, with a potential 11th on the way, Chelsea have been keen to offload some of their 39 squad players, including Raheem Sterling.
Sterling was left disappointed after failing to make the Blues’ Premier League opening day squad against Manchester City, and his management putting out a statement to question coach Enzo Maresca’s decision put a nail in the coffin of his chances with the Blues.
With Maresca making it known that Sterling and other players who are not currently training with the first team will have zero minutes of playing time, the onus has been on the England international to find new club with Manchester United, Arsenal, and Juventus circling.
The Gunners appear the most desperate for Sterling as they hope to bolster their attacking unit that seems one or two players short of challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.
Ivan Toney to Al Ahli
Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli are reportedly desperate to add to their attacking talent which already includes Riyad Mahrez and Roberto Firmino, and English centre-forward Ivan Toney is another prime candidate that they have targeted this summer.
Despite the backlash faced by Jordan Henderson, the last English player who endorsed a move to Saudi Arabia, Al Ahli’s mouth-watering offer could still tempt Toney to make a deadline-day switch, especially as the England international is currently short of suitors and eager for a move.
If Al Ahli fail in their bid to sign Osimhen from Napoli, they will certainly have enough in their tank to secure Toney’s services, while the 28-year-old also serves as Chelsea’s backup plan in case Osimhen chooses the riches of Saudi Arabia.
Marc Guehi to Newcastle
Despite captaining Crsytal Palace during their 4-0 EFL Cup second round win over Norwich, English centre-back Marc Guehi could still be involved in a deadline day scramble with Newcastle United keen to add the centreback to their project this summer.
The Magpes have already had a £60 million bid for Guehi rejected by the Eagles but could be tempted to press on with another approach as both sides are not far apart in their valuation of the Euro 2024 star.
With Crystal Palace reportedly holding out for £65 million, Newcastle have not given up and are expected to make another formal for the English defender of Ivoria heritage.
