Robert Matano has explained why he settled on the experienced defender to take over the armband following the departure of Humphrey Mieno

Tusker head coach Robert Matano has explained the reasons he made Charles Momanyi his new permanent captain following the departure of veteran midfielder Humphrey Mieno.

Mieno chose to leave the club following the expiry of his contract, alongside vice captain Jackson Macharia, who could be joining Murang’a Seal after an eight-year spell with the brewers.

Matano decided to promote Momanyi to full time captain, having served as assistant captain for quite a while, since joining the club from Gor Mahia in 2021, and has also confirmed that Brian Bwire and Michael Kibwage will also serve as his assistants.

“Momanyi is an experienced player. He has been here with us. He was assistant captain to Hum (Humphrey Mieno), but we promoted him to full captain,” Matano told the press on Friday.

Bwire also joined the club from Kariobangi Sharks in 2021, and although his current contract has just a year left, he has been made vice captain, suggesting he could be set to sign a new deal as Matano hinted.

“He will be supported by Bwire, the one you are saying his contract is ending. If you are being promoted, do you think about leaving? You cannot leave," added the coach.

Kibwage has enjoyed leadership roles for KCB, Sofapaka and Harambee Stars U23, so it is not surprising to see him made captain despite only joining the club in 2022.

“Mike Kibwage is another one who is a very experienced player. Those are our three captains with a lot of experience. That leadership has no gap and is filled with experience," said Matano.

Meanwhile, the four-time league winning manager insists that Deogracious Ojok and Ibrahim Joshua will still be part of the team moving forwards despite reports that their contracts had come to an end.

“They are part of us, they have not gone. Their contracts have not ended. Ibrahim and Ojok, those are still our players. We don’t think about them going. The ones who have gone are gone. That is why there are replacements.”

“Those ones are still there, we know their contracts are ending but they are still there.”
