The Beer Brewers left it late before scoring and leaving Ingwe with little or no chance at coming back.

Tusker FC closed in to within four points of leaders Gor Mahia following a late 1-0 win over AFC Leopards at the Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.

The brewers needed Stewart Omondi’s added time goal to snatch all three points when it had looked like the contest was headed for a goalless draw.

The forward popped up to hammer home Lawrence Luvanda’s lofted ball to give Robert Matano’s men the victory and most importantly, close the gap on league leaders Gor Mahia.

A dull first half saw the scores remain goalless with neither side threatening although Tusker came close on the stroke of halftime when Shaphan Siwa missed from close range while Leopards’ goalkeeper Levis Opiyo was nearly caught off guard by a speculative shot.

Leopards returned from the break like a house on fire, laying siege at Tusker’s goal in the first five minutes of the restart, but the tenacity would fizzle out moments later, as both teams continued to huff and puff.

With a cautious approach employed by both Patrick Aussems and Matano, the result was a number of half chances that did not yield an end product with both teams crying out for some creativity, especially in the final third, throughout the contest.

Leopards threatened 13 minutes from time when Jaffari Owiti played in Victor Omune but the latter’s shot was saved by Brian Bwire before Tusker had a chance of their own after Omondi broke through on the right before hitting a low shot that went just inches wide.

The result extends Tusker’s unbeaten run to seven games and they are now on 42 points, four behind Gor Mahia who drew 0-0 with Sofapaka, and with a game in hand over K’Ogalo.

Leopards, meanwhile, slipped to fifth on 38 points after seeing their two-match winning run come to an end.
