The NFL program has expanded to Kenya as the league continues to invest in growing the game.
Osi Umenyiora has revealed that having a lot of talent in Africa is the reason behind the expansion of the NFL Program to reach as many countries as possible.
Umenyiora, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants, revealed that many African players are doing well in the NSL and he wants to ensure more youngsters can utilize their talents.
There are more than 125 players of African descent (born in Africa or first generation born in the U.S.) from 15 countries across the continent currently playing in the NFL.
“What we’ve seen is that there is a lot of African players in the NFL and there is massive talent in Africa. We want to give an opportunity to the people to play the game, it is a big sport. We also want them to go and connect with other people,” Umenyiora told Nation Sport.
The NFL program has expanded to Kenya as the league continues to invest in growing the game at all levels across the continent.
The expansion has seen Kenya host a talent identification camp and NFL Flag football showcase at the Moi International Sports Center. The camp began on Monday, April 10 and will run till Saturday, April 15.
Meanwhile, two Kenyans, Rodney Sande and Emmanuel Magai were called upon to be part of the camp and each of them, has big dreams going forward.
Magai revealed that it was his first time playing the game and it was a bit difficult to blend in. However, his dream of going to play for Kansas City Chiefs still lives on.
“Hopefully, I will play for Kansas City in the future. I believe that one day my dream will come true,” he said.
On his part, Sande believes he has all it takes to show the world his prowess in the sport as he eyes a slot to play for Kaizer Chiefs.
Other countries taking part in the Combine-style camp include Cameroon, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal. The participants are competing for invites to the NFL International Combine, NFL International Player Pathway Program, or an opportunity to join the NFL Academy in the UK as part of League efforts to advance pathways to play in the NFL for international athletes.
