U20 World Cup: AC Milan youngster Eletu reveals what Flying Eagles must do against Italy

Victory for either side on Wednesday will seal qualification to the knockout stages for the winner.

AC Milan starlet Victor Eletu has claimed that victory could be within the grasp of the Flying Eagles if they play as a cohesive unit when they take on Italy on Wednesday.

The two-time finalists face a formidable task on Wednesday when they take on the European side in their second group D matchday of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

Nigeria's Flying Eagles came from behind to defeat Dominican Republic 2-1 in their opening encounter of the competition, while the Italian team pulled off a surprising upset by defeating five-time champions Brazil 3-2.

Eletu confident Flying Eagles can defeat Italy

Eletu, who had featured as a substitute late in the victory on Sunday, acknowledged the difficulty level of Nigeria's Wednesday time, noting that a number of Italian players have already made appearances for their respective senior clubs.

“We must play as a team if we are to defeat them,” Eletu told NFF TV, “It will be a tough game as three, four of their players have already played for their first-team clubs.

“The only way we can beat them is to play as a team. We will give our best to qualify for the next round,” he added.

Knockout stages awaiting Italy vs Nigeria winner

Sunday's win saw the 2017 U-20 World Cup bronze medallists, overtake the Flying Eagles at the top of Group D, having scored the most goals in the group after thefirst round of matches.

Victory for either side on Wednesday is bound to seal qualification to the knockout stages for the winner, with Nigeria's head coach Ladan Bosso stating that they would apply lessons learnt in their last victory, against the Europeans.

The fixture slated for Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza will kick off at 7 pm Nigerian time.
