Bayern vs Arsenal
Both sides played out a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium last Tuesday, and Mikel Arteta’s men sought a rare victory at the Allianz Arena this week to eliminate the deposed Bundesliga champions.
Wednesday’s game in Bavaria was decided by Joshua Kimmich, netting his first continental goal of the season to carry Thomas Tuchel’s side into the last four against Real Madrid with a 3-2 aggregate win.
Arsenal’s pitiful UCL record against Bayern
This season’s failure to beat Die Bayern makes the North London side winless in five knockout ties against the Bundesliga giants, second to Real Madrid eliminating the German outfit six times.
Arsenal have been unsuccessful in the 2004-05 first knockout round (3-2 on aggregate), the same stage in the 12-13 season (3-3, with Bayern advancing on away goals), and again in 13-14 after losing 3-1 on aggregate.
The Gunners’ fourth elimination by Bayern came in the 2016-17 campaign, in which Arsene Wenger’s men were eliminated 10-2 on aggregate.
What comes next for Arsenal?
Arsenal hope to shake off Champions League disappointment by responding in the Premier League title run-in.
Mikel Arteta’s men travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, keen to respond to back-to-back losses in all competitions, with success taking them above Manchester City, who are in FA Cup semi-final duty against Chelsea.
The Gunners take on Mauricio Pochettino’s men on April 23 at the Emirates Stadium.
