UEFA executive vice-president David Gill is leading the opposition opposing Ceferin's plans.

The case surrounding the possible new mandate of UEFA president Aleksandar Ceferin continues to divide the powerful figures in the European headquarters. In recent days, the English media spread the information that the team of the Slovenian has already presented the proposal to change the statute of the headquarters so that Ceferin can run again for the president of UEFA in 2027.

According to the current regulations, the post can only be held for three terms, and Ceferin has been in office since 2016. The same publications in the Island claim that former UEFA executive vice-president David Gill is leading the opposition opposing Ceferin's plans.

UEFA, however, defines this debate as "meaningless and hypocritical", claims "Marka", citing sources close to the headquarters. The argument is that, in fact, the mandate can be extended without changing the statute at all, and Ceferin is, and currently is, entitled to do so. The key is a decision by UEFA's Legal Committee, which will simply be reaffirmed by Congress in February 2023.

According to him, "mandates before July 1, 2017, will not be taken into account in the context of the time limits established in Article 22.1". This means that the first term of two and a half years, when Ceferin was at the head of the headquarters, will not be taken into account, and in fact in 2027 the Slovenian will be able to run for a third term, not a fourth.

In other words, Čeferin will have the right to remain in office even without changing the statute, in which the limitations on the time in which the position can be performed were introduced precisely during the administration of the Slovenian.

In this sense, Gill's actions, which according to UEFA sources are not a surprise, do not make sense. Moreover, Ceferin himself had not yet decided whether he would run for office in 2027.

Sources quoted by "Marka" add that, in principle, the planned changes will not ensure anyone the opportunity to remain in office for a long time, because anyone can apply and win in open and free elections.

Uefa added that all the governing bodies of world sports associations have long terms, and David Gill himself has been on the Uefa Executive Committee for 11 years, so it is strange that he should suddenly start fighting against principles he is personally opposed to. benefited in such a long period of time.
