UEFA Champions League: 5 records broken and set in matchday 3

Tunde Young 12:19 - 26.10.2023

The third round of UEFA Champions League group stage matches saw some old records broken and new ones set.

Matchday three of the UEFA Champions League has come and gone with 16 interesting games producing great action and some surprising results.

27 of the 32 teams in action scored a total of 46 goals in the 16 matches played on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Here are 5 interesting records broken and set in those 16 matches in no particular order.

Wonderkid Zaire-Emery

Warren Zaire-Emery notched two assists in Paris Saint Germain’s 3-0 win at home to AC Milan to take his tally for the season up to three, making him the highest assist provider in the Champions League.

At 17 years and 231 days, Zaire-Emery became the youngest player since the 2003/04 season to assist two goals in a Champions League game.

Real Madrid’s European dominance

Real Madrid sealed a routine 2-1 win away at Braga which put them firmly on top of Group C with three wins out of three.

That win was not just a routine win though, it was a landmark one as Braga became the 108th different team Real Madrid have beaten in the European Cup/Champions League, more than any other team in the history of top-level European football.

Dortmund end the English hoodoo

Borussia Dortmund beat Newcastle United by a lone goal in what was their first Champions League this season and even their first goal in the tournament.

It was also historic for the Germans as this was their first win on English soil since beating Tottenham 2-1 in 2016, a nice relief after six consecutive losses in England.

Newcastle’s home run

That Dortmund victory was also an unwanted piece of history for Newcastle United who before then had not lost a home game in European competition for the first time since 2003.

The Magpies were beaten 2-0 at St James’ Park by Barcelona in March 2003 which was also their last Champions League game until this season when they thrashed PSG 4-1.

Newcastle’s English experience

Still on the game at St James’ Park on Wednesday, Newcastle United played 10 English players, the most ever played by any team at once in a Champions League since Blackburn in 1995.

Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Matt Targett, Dan Burn, Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, Jamaal Lascelles and Anthony Gordon are the 10 Englishmen who played against Dortmund and made history.
