CAF WCL Umar Abdallah Loi: Ugandan coach happy with South Sudanese club's progress

Umar Abdallah Loi is contented with the progress that his South Sudanese team Yei Joint Stars, has registered over time.

The team lost their opening match of the CAF Women’s Champions League 3-0 to Kampala Queens, but they put up a brave performance that was only eclipsed by Fazila Ikwaput’s brilliance.

Unlike the previous editions, Umar Abdallah’s side posed some threats to the Ugandan champions making their opponents rethink their strategy.

“It will always be tricky when you play the hosts in the opening game, and that caused us some issues adapting,” Loi told Pulse Sports in a brief interview.

Limited games

The coach says that one of the biggest undoings of the club and women’s football growth is the limited number of games played since the league is just starting to pick.

“It’s a bit challenging because we put the team together but lack the opportunity to test the girls. What you saw on the field in the opening match was that my players lacked match fitness because we don’t have many games to test them in South Sudan.

“But,” the soft-spoken coach adds, “they’re a work in progress because if you’ve been following how they played in the previous tournaments, then you can see some great improvement.”

Work in progress

Indeed, it is a work in progress!

Yei Joints has been one of the whipping girls since the continental club championships were introduced, but they performed better on Saturday.

In the inaugural 2021 season, the team managed only one win (2-1) against another minnow New Generation FC from Zanzibar, before losing 11-0 and 10-0 to Vihiga Queens (Kenya) and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, respectively.

They returned last year to another baptism of fire in identical 6-0 losses at the hands of She Corporates and Garde Republic from Zanzibar and another 4-0 to Simba Queens.

They play Djibouti’s FAD Club on Friday in their second match.
