France could welcome two of its retired veteran internationals back to the fold in 2024

Former France internationals Hugo Lloris and Raphael Varane could be set for an international return after both players retired from the national team immediately after the 2022 World Cup.

The pair are veterans of the national team and called time on the careers within days of each other.

Lloris, at 36, had seen all that the national team had to offer before retiring. The goalkeeper was with the team for 14 years and 145 appearances, picking up the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner's medal, and lifting the trophy as the captain of the side.

Varane had also been a veteran of the 2018 World Cup and had been with the team for eight years, but retired citing fatigue and a congested fixture card after the most recent edition of the World Cup.

Both players could now be set for a return to the international scene, although not with the France senior squad.

Lloris and Varane are reportedly set to make themselves available for France’s U23 side, which will play at the 2024 summer Olympic Games in Paris.

The pair could be part of the country’s Olympic spectacle next year and could make up two of the three available slots for over-aged players at the U23 competition.

The last slot is expected to go to current France senior team captain Kylian Mbappe, who has been vocal about representing the country at the Olympics.

The Olympics in 2024 will be held between the end of the 2024 European Championships in Germany and the start of the 2024 season but Lloris and Varane will not be overburdened as they will not be at the Euros and can therefore play in the Olympics with comfort.
