Jacob Onyango who crafts his trade with FKFPL side Bidco United believes Kenya can overcome their woes by emulating their neighbors Tanzania and Uganda's league structure.

Bidco United’s seasoned defender, Jacob Onyango, has offered a candid assessment of the challenges facing Kenyan football, particularly the Harambee Stars.

The former Ulinzi player, who dreams of earning his first national team call-up, believes the root of the problem lies in the mismanagement of the local league.

“Every footballer dreams of representing their country, and I hope to have that chance one day,” Onyango said via Tata Sport.

“Kenyan football has potential, but there are key issues that need addressing. For example, inconsistency with league sponsors is a major problem. Sometimes a sponsor is only onboard for six months before pulling out, leaving the league unattractive and unstable.”

Onyango also highlighted financial instability as a key factor affecting player performance that transcends to the national side.

“When salaries delay, players struggle to focus mentally. Imagine preparing for a match while worrying about how your family will eat. It affects your performance on the pitch,” he explained.

Reflecting on Kenya’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Onyango emphasized the need to learn from neighboring East African nations like Uganda and Tanzania.

Both countries have secured places in the continental showpiece, underscoring their progress in football development.

“Tanzania’s starting XI has about eight players from their local league. That’s because they’ve heavily invested in their domestic football, and now they’re reaping the rewards,” Onyango noted.

“We have the talent and quality in Kenya. What we lack is proper investment and the right call-ups to the national team.”

Onyango’s insights come at a crucial time for Kenyan football, as debates continue over the sport’s administration and the performance of Harambee Stars even as they look for Engin Firat's replacement after the Turkish tactician resigned.

Despite these challenges, the defender remains optimistic about both his club and national team prospects.

Reunited with Bidco United in 2023 after a stint with Ulinzi Stars, Onyango is currently focused on helping his club escape the relegation zone in the FKF Premier League. The Oilers sit 16th with 14 points from 14 matches, trailing the league leaders by 10 points.
