Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has claimed that Victor Boniface would need to demonstrate his abilities once more to regain Patrik Schick's starting shirt.

Following his transfer from Royale Union SG to Bayer Leverkusen last year, Boniface has been incredibly productive for the team.

This season, he has hit the ground running, scoring six goals in his first 10 games and keeping Schick on the bench.

However, his recent injury that has kept him out of the team until the new year has seen his place in Alonso’s side taken by Schick, who is scoring goals for fun.

Alonso speaks on Boniface and Schick’s position

Leverkusen manager Alonso was asked about Boniface's chances of getting back into the starting lineup after his injury after Schick's performance.

The Spanish tactician disclosed that his decision over who gets to start would be determined on how well they perform both during practice and during games.

Speaking to Oma Akatugba, Alonso said, “I have difficulty in choosing players to use in all the positions, I like to have it.

“What we want is that everyone is fighting for a position to get better and help them team. We’ll have so many games, all the players will have their moments.

“But the most important is that the same way that Patrik Schick is in good form, we want to have Boniface in good form as well.

“We want him fully fit that he forgets his injuries, he is working hard on the pitch, and scoring goals.

“Boniface and Schick decide who plays because the one that deserves and proves himself usually gets the chance.”

The Super Eagles star is expected to return to action in January but has started undergoing light training to regain his fitness.
