AFCON 2023: Angola in turmoil as star quits camp ahead of crunch tie vs Nigeria
The Palancas Negras of Angola face familiar foes in the Nigeria Super Eagles in the AFCON 2023 last eight on Friday.
"I took the number 22 because it's the day I lost my mum” - Boniface said while speaking to Nigeria’s sports radio station, Brila FM.
The forward, who is currently injured, has always paid tribute to his late mum, while also showering so much love on his grandmother, who is still alive.
Pulse Sports reported how he took his grandmother to watch him play during a match for Leverkusen, while she also met Swiss midfielder, Granit Xhaka.
On the road to recovery
Boniface is currently nursing a groin injury he sustained during international duty with Nigeria. This injury, specifically a muscle and tendon injury in his right adductor, necessitated surgery, sidelining him for an estimated three months.
As a result, he missed the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Leverkusen and its fans eagerly anticipate his return to the pitch, projected for April 2024, hoping his recovery brings him back stronger.
