The midfielder signed a new two-year deal in December 2022.

Former Harambee Stars skipper Victor Wanyama took a massive $107,600 (Ksh14,784,240) pay cut to extend his stay with Canadian side CF Montreal in a new deal that was inked at the start of the season.

The 31-year-old had announced plans to leave the club after the end of last season in October but later rescinded his decision by penning a new two-year contract that will expire in December 2024.

According to the Major Soccer League (MLS) Players Association’s release of the 2023 salary, Wanyama is pocketing an annual salary of $1,800,000 (Ksh247,320,000) as per his current contract.

This translates to a $150,000 (Ksh20,610,000) monthly salary which makes him the best-paid player at Canadian outfit CF Montreal this season.

In his previous contract that expired in December 2022, Wanyama took home a staggering annual salary of $3,091,667 (Ksh343,484,000).

Broken down into monthly payments, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder earned $257,600 (Ksh35,394,240) which was also enough to make him the highest-paid player in his club.

It is however important to note that the figures are his annual guaranteed compensation with his basic salary currently standing at $1,440,000 (Ksh197,856,000).

The annual average guaranteed compensation number includes a player's base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the term of the player's contract, including option years.

The average annual guaranteed compensation figure also includes any marketing bonus and any agent's fees, both annualized over the term of the contract but fails to include Performance Bonuses because there is no guarantee that the player will hit those bonuses.

Meanwhile, after a torrid start to the season, Wanyama’s Montreal have picked up form, winning six straight games in all competitions, and are currently placed 12th in the 15-team Eastern Conference.
