The Brazilian star narrowly missed out on the 2024 award but already has the support of a former Real Madrid teammate for the 2025 edition
Al Ittihad star Karim Benzema has thrown his weight behind his former Real Madrid teammate Vinicius Junior in the race for football’s highest individual honour, the Ballon d’Or.
In an interview with RTVE’s Telediario, the Frenchman didn’t mince words, describing the Brazilian as the standout player of the current footballing era. While also acknowledging Kylian Mbappe’s abilities, Benzema made it clear that Vinicius has his backing for future Ballon d’Or glory.
Benzema’s believes in Vinicius supremacy
“Vinicius is number one,” Benzema declared emphatically, clearly in awe of the winger’s electrifying talent and consistent performances for Real Madrid.
The Frenchman, who shared numerous memorable moments with the Brazilian during their time at Real Madrid, also noted that Vinicius is on the brink of claiming the prestigious Ballon d’Or if he maintains his current trajectory.
Benzema praised Vinicius’ ability to adapt to the team’s needs, calling him a “perfect” player for Real Madrid.
Despite falling short of the accolade so far, Benzema believes it is only a matter of time before Vinicius takes centre stage in the biggest stage in football.
Benzema praises Mbappe’s new role
While speaking with RTVE, Benzema also touched on the evolution of Mbappe, who is now a key figure at Real Madrid.
He acknowledged Mbappe’s improvement since his move from PSG, particularly as he adapts to his role as a central striker.
Benzema also sees this transition as an opportunity for the French forward to fully showcase his potential, a process that has been challenging but promising.
While Benzema admires Mbappe’s progress, his unwavering support for Vinicius suggests he sees the Brazilian, not his compatriot as the heir to the Ballon d’Or throne.
