Vipers SC head coach Leonard Martins Neiva has criticised Jwaneng Galaxy’s approach in Saturday night’s CAF Champions League Preliminaries clash at St. Mary’s Kitende.

Jwaneng got a late goal to lose 2-1 but progressed to the next round with a 3-2 aggregate victory, sending Vipers out of the competition.

The home side largely dominated the match, and Yunus Sentamu’s first half brace looked to have settled any nerves for the Startimes Uganda Premier League champions.

But Kitende was silenced when Gilberto Baruti converted a well-taken freekick in the 89th minute to give Vipers a task too big to accomplish in the eight added minutes.

“Unfortunately, the Galaxy team, they come here but no football, no fair play. They come here just to try and stop the game,” a frustrated Neiva told the press after the match.

“We scored two goals in the first half, and our target was like that, it was like a new game for us in the second half. We kept our system, and they increased their intensity, but there were so many chances for us,” he added.

The defeat ended Vipers’ ambitions of reaching the group stages of the CAF Champions League for the second year running.

Having played in the group stages last season, a return to the same stage was one of the targets for Neiva, who replaced Alex Isabirye.

“Unfortunately, there was a dead ball, a free kick and they scored just like that so it’s football but again I’m very proud about Vipers players,” Neiva noted.

Vipers’ attention will have to be drawn back to the first round clash in Botswana, where they failed to get an away goal and conceded two. The visitors ensured they stayed in the game at Kitende and when their opportunity came, they pounced to grab a ticket to the next round.

Jwaneng will now face South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, who defeated Djabal FC 3-0 in the return leg to win the tie 4-0 on aggregate.

Vipers and Neiva's attention will now turn to defending the Startimes Uganda Premier League and Stanbic Uganda Cup.
