Emmanuel Adebayor has weighed in the debate over whether Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk should be rated amongst the greatest defenders of all-time.

Former Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor does not believe Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk ranks among the greatest defenders of all time.

Van Dijk has received plenty of plaudits since he signed for Liverpool in January 2018, being a key cog in the renaissance of the English Premier League giants under former manager Jurgen Klopp and now Arne Slot.

The Dutchman is renowned not just for his great defending but also his ball-playing abilities which has helped set a strong base for Liverpool to become one of the best teams in the world.

However, when asked if Van Dijk should be considered one of the greats in his position, Adebayor’s response was emphatic.

“No, by far because I used to play against [Nemanja] Vidic, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, I played against and with William Gallas. I played with Kolo Toure. So, for me, he is a great defender, no doubt about that, give him his credit,” Adebayor told Kenyan journalist Eric Njiru.

“He is a very good defender, clean, his technical ability is good, on offensive corners he can score goals with his head on freekick but the greatest defender of all time? I am sorry not.”

Adebayor’s assessment will add fuel to the debate which has seen some observers laud Van Dijk as one of the greats, even better than some of the names the Togo captain mentioned.

Van Dijk has made 309 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, scoring 26 goals, while winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA and Carabao Cup and is on course for his second league title on Merseyside as they enjoy a 16-point lead over second-placed Arsenal, having played two matches more.
