Arsenal released a statement confirming that Miedema would need to undergo surgery for an ACL injury

The fears of Arsenal fans around the world have been confirmed, as Vivianne Miedema is set to undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Just weeks after losing another forward, Beth Mead, to the same injury, Arsenal Women have now announced that the club’s all-time leading goal scorer is set for an extended period on the sidelines with an ACL injury.

During Arsenal's match against Lyon in the UEFA Women's Champions League, the Dutch forward fell awkwardly and needed to be carried off, which prompted fears of a serious injury.

Miedema set for ligament surgery

As reported by Arsenal, Miedema will now undergo surgery, and her expected time of return will be determined after the surgery, although she will be missing out on the rest of the 2022/23 season at least, and is also a major dout for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in New

Part of Arsenal’s statement read “We can confirm that Vivianne Miedema suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during our UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Lyon at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

“Viv will undergo surgery in the coming days and will unfortunately be ruled out for an extended period of time. A more detailed timescale will be established once the operation is complete.”

Miedema also took to twitter to share an emotional statement which read, ““Absolutely gutted to share I’ve ruptured my ACL in our last game against Lyon,” Miedema said on Twitter. “It was one of those moments, where I knew straight away. So many things going through your head: I won’t be able to help my team anymore this season, no World Cup, surgery and rehab for a long, long time.

“I won’t be telling you I’ll come back stronger or that I’m looking forward to spend the next however many months in the gym. It will be tough with plenty of difficult days (plenty of crying, which we’ve had a lot of already), but sadly enough it’s part of football.”

Arsenal and the Netherlands could struggle without Miedema

Despite being only 26 years old, Miedema is already the top scorer in the history of Arsenal Women and the Netherlands national team, and they will now both be without her for crucial periods in 2023.

Arsenal have started both the league and UWCL campaigns well and are top of their UWCL group and second in the FA WSL, only three points behind Chelsea. But Miedema’s injury has now put a huge dent in their plans for the season.

The Netherlands will also be without their star goalscorer as they head to the 2023 Women’s World Cup looking to improve on their semifinal finish.
