Mbarara City FC head coach Wasswa Bossa has named Joseph Akandwanaho as the new team captain ahead of the new Startimes Uganda Premier League season.
The announcement came just hours before the team’s first match of the season, a home clash with NEC FC at Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara.
Akandwanaho is among Bossa’s new signings at the club and will now have the opportunity to lead the Ankole Lions in their fight to maintain UPL status at the end of the season.
Mbarara City was captained by Jude Semugabi last season, and the striker helped the team return to the top flight immediately but has since moved on to join Kitara FC.
Karim Ramathan and Henry Musisi will deputise Akandwanaho.

UPL Hussein Mbalangu back to Mbarara City for revenge
Then, Mbalangu left his role as Mbarara City's head coach, citing lack of financial support, poor player welfare and administration.
Bossa and his charges will be looking to get off to a good start when they host NEC, a team they played twice in the FUFA Big League with no side able to pick up maximum points.
The two sides played out a goalless draw at the NEC Grounds in Bugolobi before a 1-1 stalemate in Mbarara.
Friday’s clash will provide a platform for one of the sides to collect maximum points and start the new season on a high.
