Okumu sealed a Ksh1.8 billion move to French side Stade Reims on Saturday.

Stade Reims’ new Kenyan defender Joseph Okumu has been given a rather cheeky welcome by his new teammates in training after arriving from Belgian outfit KAA Gent.

Last Saturday, Reims, who are managed by the “football manager guru” Will Still, confirmed the signing of Okumu, who will don the number 2 jersey, the same jersey he dons for Harambee Stars, implying that he will be a key figure for the Belgian-English coach in France.

The club are currently conducting their preseason training in sunny Spain as Still continues to impose his blueprint on the team, having been appointed head coach on a full-time basis.

During training, Okumu, alongside his new fellow signings Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Reda Khadra were asked to move through a guard of honour formed by teammates.

The challenge involved Okumu and his new colleagues running through a tunnel of players trying to slap them on their heads and backs, which meant they had to run through the tunnel as quickly as possible to avoid undergoing the wrath of hot-red burnings they would feel from the slaps.

Thankfully, all three players were able to get through the tunnel, and Okumu could be seen laughing and smiling afterwards with his peers.

Okumu sealed a €12 million (Ksh1.8 billion) transfer to Reims after two years with Belgian Pro League outfit KAA Gent,

He became only the second-ever Kenyan to play in the French top flight after Dennis Oliech. The 26-year-old started his career playing for the now-defunct Kenya Premier League side Chemelil Sugar and also had stints in South Africa's Free State Stars and USA's Real Monarchs.

He then sealed a move to Sweden’s IF Elfsborg, before Gent came calling. He helped the side get to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.

Okumu was set to feature as the club’s vice-captain this season before a move to Ligue 1 came calling.
