The Tanzanian giants did not hesitate to take a dig at their bitter rivals as they snapped up one of their long-serving players on Wednesday.

Tanzania champions Yanga SC had one of the most memorable player unveilings when they announced the signing of former Simba SC midfielder Jonas Mkude on Wednesday.

Mkude left Simba after 13 years with Wekundu wa Msimbazi and was among a host of long-serving players who were released at the end of their contracts last month.

Yanga took the opportunity to snap up the experienced midfielder, making him their third signing this window, and did not hesitate to have a dig at their bitter rivals when unveiling the midfielder.

In a clip posted on social media, Mkude is seen wearing the green and yellow of Yanga, holding a ball as he walks onto the pitch after which he meets a lion (Simba) who approaches him in anger as if to attack him.

He is unfazed by the ‘King of the Jungle’ and draws a sword which he uses to slash off the lion’s head and holds it to the delight of fans, who cheer loudly.

The defensive midfielder is known for his physicality, tackling ability, and leadership qualities on the field and will offer Yanga solidity and experience in the middle of the pack as they seek to challenge on multiple fronts yet again after winning a domestic treble while reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final last season.

Mkude began his football career at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of Simba’s youth academy.

He made his debut for the senior team in 2010 and soon became an integral part of the squad. His performances caught the attention of both fans and scouts and he established himself as one of the key players for Simba.

The Tanzania international won five league titles, three FA Cups, and as many Mapinduzi Cups during his time with Wekundu wa Msimbazi.
