Sheffield Wednesday put four goals past Plymouth Argyle in Wayne Rooney's first game in charge.

Wayne Rooney suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat in his first game as Plymouth Argyle coach, with the team's performance described as "utterly abject."

The former England captain, who took over the struggling Championship side in May, saw his team concede four goals and commit numerous errors in their opening game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Rooney had the option of choosing the comfort of a punditry role in a television studio rather than joining many great players turned unsuccessful managers but the Manchester United legend decided otherwise.

His passion and commitment to football remained so strong, as he shared with Mail Sport over the weekend.

Rooney admitted his disappointment and surprise at the team's performance, stating, "Today wasn’t good enough, I think that’s clear, and I’m disappointed, angry and surprised.

"From everything we’ve seen in pre-season, I was surprised, but the basics of the game were not good enough, whether that’s getting to the ball, tackling or being aggressive," Mail Sport.

The former Manchester United player also acknowledged the team's failure to execute their game plan, highlighting Sheffield Wednesday's dominance from crosses and cutbacks.

Despite the heavy defeat, Rooney remains determined to turn things around, emphasising the importance of learning from the experience.

"It’s the first game of the season, and I’ve seen the work we’ve done in pre-season which gives me encouragement, so it’s not a time to panic," he said.

The result has put immense pressure on Rooney early in his tenure, with questions already being raised about his managerial capabilities.
