FKFPL Wazito ease relegation woes with win over Sofapaka

Festus Chuma 15:30 - 25.04.2023

The Muhoroni-based side had to dig deep for a win against Batoto ba Mungu.

Wazito FC made it two wins on the spin in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) after they beat Sofapaka 3-2 at Kasarani Annex on Tuesday afternoon.

After opening the scoring in the 25th minute through a headed goal by Sofapaka forward Roddy Manga, Wazito had to fight in the second stanza for the victory.

Both teams adopted a cautious approach and there was little to choose between the two sides in the opening proceedings with Batoto ba Mungu edging the possession stakes.

Wazito upped the tempo at the quarter-hour mark while looking to use their imposing physique and aerial prowess to unsettle Sofapaka's defense.

However, it was Sofapaka who took an early lead in the 25th minute when Congolese striker Roddy Manga rose high and nodded in Evans Makari's cross from a set piece to make it 1-0.

Wazito attempted to get into the game with patient build-up play, particularly on their left flank, as the likes of Collins Neto and Stephen Bwire often linked up going forward.

However it was Sofapaka who continued to ask questions in the Wazito half and often troubled the traveling side in wide areas.

As the first stanza mark rolled on, Batoto ba Mungu remained on the front foot and forced their opponents to concede a couple of free-kicks and corner opportunities.

Wazito got the second half off with a bang and manufactured a number of goal-scoring opportunities from the outset and they got rewarded in the 52nd-minute courtesy of Stephen Bwire’s strike.

However, Sofapaka remained calm under pressure and looked to catch Wazito on the break and they came close in the 57th minute when Roy Okal linked up with Sunday Ikhekhai on the edge of the Wazito area. However, the Nigerian forward was let down by an inaccurate attempt at goal.

The visitors went ahead three minutes after the hour-mark when Bwire found his second and  made it 2-1 for  Wazito.

Nine minutes later, Sofapaka restored parity when South Sudan defender Addis Panoam got to the end of a loose ball in the Wazito box and poked home his first of the season to make it 2-2 to Sofapaka.

The crowd were still applauding the youngster's strike when Wazito went ahead in the 79th minute courtesy of second half substitute Samuel Adebowale as they registered their fourth win of the season.
