The Muhoroni-based outfit have revealed the difficulties they have been facing under the Wazito identity, necessitating the name change

Wazito FC are set to change their name to Muhoroni Youth after being given the green light by Football Kenya Federation.

The change comes just a year after Wazito changed ownership in 2022 with Kisumu-based businessman Joel Odongo buying the club from Dubai-based tycoon Ricardo Badoer.

Odongo is believed to have been holding brief for Muhoroni-based businessman Moses Adagala and this came clear when the team relocated its base from Nairobi to Kisumu and later Muhoroni.

It has now come full circle with the change of name to Muhoroni Youth, a name that was used by the Adagala-owned outfit when they played in the Kenyan Premier League as well as the lower divisions following their relegation in 2018.

According to club CEO Collince Dave, the change was necessary as the name Wazito had become baggage.

“It was evident that we were going to change names. Muhoroni Youth has been our brand since the club was formed in 2011,” Dave told Pulse Sports.

“The name had become a problem. We have been engaging sponsors but they are not familiar and comfortable with the name Wazito. We had to change because we have big plans for the team,” he added.

Wazito, or now Muhoroni Youth, secured their top-flight status following their 3-0 aggregate win against Migori Youth in the promotion-relegation playoff last weekend.

The club recorded a goalless draw in Migori a week earlier before turning on the style at home to ensure another season in the top flight.

Dave confirmed that the players were given a one-week break and will resume their training on Monday ahead of the 2023-24 campaign which they start with an away clash to Nairobi City Stars on August 27.
