Maresca's message to Chelsea fans after Ipswich defeat

The Italian manager said that the Blues didn't expect to be where they are on the Premier League table.

"Not one of us in this room expected us to be where we are now. This means and shows that we are in the right direction…but also shows that we are far from competing (with) consistency and to be there with the best teams in England," Maresca told reporters via Reuters.

He added, "I think we (have) to be satisfied with where we are, but at the same time we need to know we (can) do things better."

Despite some impressive wins earlier in the season, Maresca has consistently played down the title chances of his expensively assembled squad. He attributed the recent dip in form to the inherent nature of football.

"We expected this kind of moment during the season because we know that this kind of moment belongs to football. It is almost impossible to have a season where you do not have a moment like now for us," he explained.

Chelsea's next game will be away to Crystal Palace on Saturday, January 4th.
