The Italian manager has challenged the Blues' Premier League rivals after seeing his side blow the League Two club to smithereens on Tuesday night.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was pleased with his young squad’s seriousness and professionalism in their EFL Cup success against Barrow before firing a warning shot at their Premier League rivals.

A Christopher Nkunku hat-trick, the first Blues goal for summer arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers Pedro Neto and a Paul Farman own goal sealed a comfortable 5-0 third-round success over the League Two opponents at Stamford Bridge.

What Maresca said after Chelsea’s win

The Chelsea boss disclosed his satisfaction that despite his players’ youth, they are adept at playing high-level football.

He then seemed to warn the West London club’s rivals with subsequent statements, suggesting that his side are keen to compete for the major honours after recent struggles since the club’s ownership change.

“Before the game, I asked the players that even if we are the youngest squad in the Premier League, they have to show how serious we are,” said Maresca after the 5-0 success.

“For me, the most important thing tonight was winning the game, but also sending a message that yes, we are young, but we are men, we are serious and we want to compete.

“I think the performance was very good and we showed how serious we are.”
