'Nigeria showed more hunger' - Ghana coach admits Super Eagles' superiority after CHAN qualifier defeat
Ghana's coach stated that Super Eagles B showed more hunger after his side during their defeat to Nigeria in the CHAN qualifiers.
Historic win for the Super Eagles
The match started with Nigeria dominating from the outset, despite Ghana’s confidence after a goalless first leg in Accra.
Captain Junior Nduka created the opener in the 18th minute, delivering a pinpoint pass to clubmate Ismaila Sodiq, who deftly found the back of the net.
Just two minutes later, Nduka turned scorer as he capitalised on a corner kick to double the lead, sweeping the ball past Ghanaian goalkeeper Benjamin Asare as the visiting defence faltered.
The Super Eagles continued their dominance, with Saviour Isaac scoring the third goal just three minutes later, taking advantage of a defensive mix-up between Asare and defender Nurudeen Abdulai.
Nigeria's relentless pressure kept Ghana on the back foot, and although Ghana managed to pull one back through Stephen Amankona late in the second half, it was not enough to change the outcome.
What the Super Eagles coach said
Ogunmodede expressed his excitement over the win, noting that the team is now focused on contending for the championship title in February 2025, when the tournament will be held in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
“We are happy to have given Nigerians a good gift for this yuletide period,” he told the media moments after the game in Uyo.
“But we will not over-celebrate this achievement and forget the crux of the matter. We will work hard so that we can contend very well for the trophy at the finals in February,” he added.
This victory not only ended Nigeria's six-year absence from the CHAN but also an emphatic psychological win over their long-time rivals.
While Nigerians celebrate this milestone, Ogunmodede remains focused on the road ahead, determined to lead his team to success in the upcoming tournament.
