'We didn’t believe' - Edo Queens' Emem Essien recounts how they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns

Essien and Mary Mamudu netted late goals to overcome Melinda Kgadiete’s 24th-minute opener for the defending champions.

Emem Essien has disclosed that she and her teammates didn't believe that they would defeat Mamelodi Sundowns.

Recall that Edo Queens’ defeated their South African counterpart in a dramatic 2-1 victory on Saturday night, securing a spot in the semi-finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Essien and Mary Mamudu netted late goals to overcome Melinda Kgadiete’s 24th-minute opener for the defending champions.

The Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) champions topped the Group with seven points, after defeating CBE 3-0 in their first game before sharing spoils with Egyptian club FC Masar in their second group-stage match and defeating Sundowns in the final game.

Reacting after the game the striker confirmed that they never thought they would win but their determination helped them to succeed.

“I am happy, I am happy, that is all I can say. We didn’t believe this would happen, but with the spirit of never giving up, we did it,” the delighted striker said after game.

Edo Queens will face TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

With the qualification into the semi-final sealed, Edo Queens are guaranteed to earn $350,000 while the winner will earn $600,000 (a trillion naira).

The runners-up will go home with $400,000, while third place gets $350,000, along with other monetary incentives.
