10-man Manchester United sent Arsenal packing in the FA Cup third round.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed disbelief after his side's FA Cup third-round exit to 10-man Manchester United on penalties.

The match, which ended 1-1 after extra time, saw Arsenal dominate possession and create numerous scoring opportunities but ultimately failed to capitalise.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for United but Gabriel equalised for the Gunners, shortly after Diogo Dalot saw red for a second bookable offence.

Arsenal then had a golden opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot, but captain Martin Odegaard's effort was saved by United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir also proved to be the hero in the penalty shootout, saving Kai Havertz's attempt to seal United's victory.

What Arteta said

Former Chelsea forward Havertz missed a clear chance in the final ten minutes of normal time, leaving Arteta stunned by the final result.

He said, "Incredible how you don't win the game. The dominance, the superiority in relation to the opposition and everything that we did to try to win the game and that's it. We didn't get what we deserved clearly, but there is an element that is about putting the ball in the back of the net.

"We did it once and with the amount of situations, chances, penalties that we had we didn't (again). We go home extremely sad but I cannot be prouder of my players," Arteta told reporters via Reuters.

Arsenal entered the match on a 10-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League, closing the gap on league leaders Liverpool.

However, this FA Cup defeat, coupled with a 2-0 home loss to Newcastle United in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final, has significantly reduced their chances of winning silverware this season.

Despite the consecutive cup losses, Arteta downplayed any added pressure ahead of their upcoming match against local rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
