William Troost-Ekong has endorsed Augustine Eguavoen to guide the group to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles captain returned to the Nigerian national team after being left out for former coach Finidi George.

The defender helped the Super Eagles keep a clean sheet in their 3-0 bashing of Benin Republic on Saturday.

Troost-Ekong was happy with Eguavoen's coaching ability after the team secured a comfortable win over former coach Gernot Rohr.

Ekong supports Eguavoen

Pulse Sports reported a few days ago that Troost Ekong prefers a local coach for the Super Eagles team to a foreign coach.

He has now made it known that he is in full support of Eguavoen’s appointment after their win against Benin Republic.

Troost Ekong said, “We respect Benin, the last time we played against them, they won the game. But like I said, we have great belief in our team and in our coach, who is like a family member who has come back to us,”

“I think that with the attacking talent we have, if we play very well, we try our best to keep the door shut at the back, we will create chances and score.

“I think today was a good indication of the direction we are heading. It is the first step of many that we will take to get to AFCON.”

The Nigeria Football Federation hired Eguavoen as their interim coach because they were unable to find a permanent replacement.

Eguavoen, however, was not new to the Super Eagles; in fact, he had previously served in that capacity, leading the team to the 2021 AFCON in 2023.

The Super Eagles will now travel to Rwanda for their next AFCON qualifiers as they look to get six points for their first two games.
